Overview of the Terminal T2 international passenger terminal expansion project – Noi Bai International Airport

The Terminal T2 international passenger terminal at Noi Bai International Airport has been in operation since 2015, with an initial design capacity of 10 million passengers per year, serving as a key international aviation gateway for the Capital and Northern Vietnam. However, alongside the rapid growth of international air travel, passenger throughput at Terminal T2 has consistently exceeded its designed capacity. In the first 11 months of 2025 alone, the terminal served nearly 13 million passengers, placing significant pressure on the existing infrastructure.

In response to this reality, the Terminal T2 expansion project commenced in May 2024 and was implemented under the challenging condition of maintaining absolute safety while ensuring uninterrupted daily flight operations. After more than 18 months of construction, the completed expansion increased the total gross floor area from 139,216 m² to over 200,000 m². The number of aircraft contact gates was increased from 17 to 30, alongside expansions to the check-in hall, security screening areas, and baggage handling systems. The expansion not only raises the terminal’s operational capacity to 15 million passengers per year but also establishes a solid foundation for Terminal T2 to accommodate future growth in Vietnam’s international aviation sector.

Beyond physical expansion, the expanded Terminal T2 marks a significant milestone in Airports Corporation of Vietnam’s (ACV) digital transformation strategy. For the first time, a fully integrated digital ecosystem has been synchronously deployed at an international terminal, encompassing check-in kiosks, self bag drop counters, automated immigration lanes, and biometric security control systems. These solutions create a smart, seamless, and efficient passenger flow throughout the terminal. The shift from manual operations to automation optimizes operational capacity, enhances passenger experience, and alleviates pressure on airport operations staff.

In parallel with technological advancements, the expanded Terminal T2 emphasizes Green Airport design principles, incorporating ecological greenery throughout the terminal to create a relaxing environment for passengers. Supporting facilities have also been comprehensively upgraded, including baby strollers, diaper-changing tables, golf bag racks, prayer rooms, and ambient scent systems in public areas. These elements collectively contribute to a modern, passenger-friendly, and human-centered terminal environment.

As part of the Terminal T2 expansion project, 35 sets of NABCO automatic doors were installed at strategic locations, playing a critical role in organizing passenger flow and ensuring safety. The continued use of NABCO automatic doors from Phase 1 (2015) through the expansion phase ensures consistency in aesthetics and technical standards, while also providing long-term convenience for maintenance and operation—an especially important factor for aviation infrastructure projects.

At the main terminal entrances, NABCO automatic sliding door systems with thick tempered glass were installed, offering excellent sound insulation and thermal performance. The systems operate reliably with fast and smooth opening and closing, making them well suited to high passenger volumes and continuous operation at an international airport.

For restroom areas, particularly facilities designed for passengers with disabilities, NABCO automatic sliding doors were integrated with the dedicated HDS-4P restroom control system. This system allows one-touch button operation with clear status indicator lights, ensuring privacy, safety, and convenience for users.

The deployment of these specialized door solutions clearly reflects international standards and the strong emphasis on inclusivity and human-centered design within the public spaces of Terminal T2.
